Talcott Mountain Engagement Session, Nick Benson Photography

Photography is a passion of mine, and I love when I get a chance to work with a couple who also appreciates photography. When I met up with Lexi and Matt for their engagement session at Talcott Mountain State Park in Simsbury, I knew we were going to have a special session. These pictures were going to be different – in a good way.

I used to frequent Talcott Mountain when I needed some time to myself, as it was a short drive from West Hartford. Back in the day, when I was studying photography at the Hartford Art School, I enjoyed the long and winding paths with the trees reaching high overhead. The park lent itself as a stunning backdrop for Lexi and Matt’s engagement session with its amazing views of the Connecticut countryside.

So often right now, it seems like couples can get hung up on trendy gimmicks or ideas from websites that detract from the beauty of simply being together. Rather than spending time trying to capture just the right picture of them kissing with a sign, I far prefer being able to document the quiet moments and loving glances that couples might not even realize they share! An engagement session should be about love, not about props. I find it so much more powerful to craft images that can evoke a certain feeling upon viewing them: full of emotion, embrace, human connection, and a real sense of intimacy. Carrying props, signs and costume changes around throughout a session can reduce some of those rare, candid moments as we’re walking between locations. That natural interaction between couples can establish a timeline and a narrative to the session. It’s so great when I can surprise a couple with images like this as they sometimes don’t know I caught the picture. I’m very proud of the work I do for my couples and strive to give them the best images possible. It’s important to me that every image I capture is a piece of artwork.

I was really excited when Lexi and Matt were on the same page! Together, we made a rule for this session that there were no banners or signs allowed. No expectations. No planned and overly posed pictures and very minimal kissing. Instead, Lexi and Matt used their body language to convey what they wanted to say and to show their strong connection for each other. The way they connect with one another is effortless. Their love is so easy to document and their joy is contagious. I had a blast working with them, and couldn’t put my camera down.

Thank you, Lexi and Matt! The team and I can’t wait for your wedding in August at Cascade Fine Catering in Hamden, CT!
